Heavyweight T-Shirts: Why Fabric Weight and Fit Matter

A heavyweight T-shirt should feel like a proper garment, not a promotional giveaway. The fabric has more structure, the fit holds its shape and the tee can stand on its own instead of clinging like a thin undershirt.

That does not automatically make every heavyweight tee good. Fabric weight is one part of the build. Fit, stitching, cotton quality and care still matter.

What Does GSM Mean?

GSM stands for grams per square metre. It measures the weight of the fabric. A higher number generally means a heavier fabric, but it does not tell you everything about softness, strength or fit.

Lightweight tees can be useful in hot conditions and for layering. Heavyweight tees are chosen for a more substantial feel, stronger structure and an oversized or relaxed silhouette.

Why Crews Notice the Difference

Crane, shutdown and FIFO crews are hard on their gear. Clothes are packed into bags, worn around camp, washed repeatedly and dragged between home and site.

A heavier tee can feel more solid and hold its shape better than a thin promotional shirt. How long it lasts still depends on the garment, how it is worn and how it is washed.

Fit Matters as Much as Fabric

A thick shirt with the wrong fit is still the wrong shirt. Check the shoulder, chest length and sleeve shape rather than buying by the size label alone.

Oversized tees are intentionally wider through the body and often use dropped shoulders. If you prefer a standard fit, you may need to size differently. Always check the product size guide.

Look at the Construction

Useful details include a firm neck rib, clean seams and stitching suited to a heavier fabric. The shirt should hang evenly and the collar should not feel loose before it has even been washed.

Print quality matters too. A good garment can still be ruined by decoration that cracks, peels or has been applied without proper preparation.

Are Heavyweight Tees Workwear?

They can be practical crew apparel, but a branded heavyweight tee is not automatically site-approved workwear or PPE. Always follow the clothing, visibility, fire-risk and PPE requirements for your workplace.

Outrig tees are built for crew identity, camp, the yard, travel and off-shift wear. Wear them on site only where your employer and site rules permit.

The Outrig Heavy Crew Tee

The Outrig Supply Co Heavy Crew T-Shirt uses a 280 GSM heavyweight fabric with an oversized fit, dropped shoulders and wide neck ribbing. It is built for people who want a tee with real weight and structure.

The Heritage Badge Heavy T-Shirt uses the same heavyweight approach with a different Outrig design.

Choosing the Right Tee

  • Check the GSM, but do not treat it as the only quality measure.
  • Read the size guide and understand whether the fit is standard, relaxed or oversized.
  • Choose the design for how you will actually wear it.
  • Follow the care instructions to protect the fabric and print.
  • Do not treat branded apparel as a substitute for required PPE.

Good crew gear does not need a long sales pitch. It should feel right, fit properly and hold its place in the weekly rotation.
